Building managers and legislative staffers have sought to reassure some concerned Tennessee lawmakers that recent renovations at the state Capitol did not install special facilities for Muslims to wash their feet before praying.

“I confirmed with the facility administrator for the State Capitol Complex that the floor-level sink installed in the men’s restroom outside the House Chamber is for housekeeping use,” Legislative Administration Director Connie Ridley wrote in an email. “It is, in layman’s terms, a mop sink.”

islawmix, a project of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, is seeking to fill the position of Senior Editor. The Senior Editor will conduct interviews with experts in Islamic law, write articles that help journalists, policy makers, and citizens understand the interplay of Islamic law and American law, and engage the community of thought leaders and journalists on social media.

The position is paid and part-time (10 hours/week); the work can be performed remotely.

The ideal candidate will be a strong, accessible writer and relish fast-paced intellectual engagement on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. His/her work will serve islawmix’s non-partisan, educational mission of adding context and nuance to news coverage of Islamic law.

Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann courted controversy today by claiming that falafel and other “jihadi foods” should be banned from school lunches in the United States.

In an interview with local television station KSTP in Minneapolis, Bachmann explained that after visiting a local elementary school she was shocked to find that falafel - a fried vegetable patty popular in the Arab world - was being served as a option on the vegetarian menu.

Ostensibly in the studio to discuss her close race for reelection against Democratic challenger Jim Graves, Bachmann instead used the time to appeal for a nationwide movement against Arab cuisine.

Startled by the parochial nature of her statements, KSTP anchor Chris Johnson felt obliged to challenge her reasoning:

“I have to ask Ms. Bachmann, why is that a problem? I mean some children like the taste of falafel, what’s wrong with that?”

“Chris, falafel is a gateway food,” responded Bachmann, “It starts with falafel, then the kids move on to shawarma. After a while they say ‘hey this tastes good, I wonder what else comes from Arabia?’ “
